The Observer…
Meditation by Ranjith Vallathol “Being the Observer- The meditator’s essential practice”
After spending a few hours reading quietly on the couch yesterday, I stumbled upon a meditation that accurately described exactly what the reading was helping me to embrace. It’s not just a surrender to the moment, yet a becoming the observer in your life. Noting that our thoughts will try to hijack us to the past or the future and believe me when I say it will try so hard that it is almost irresistible to fight. By watching our beings like we are watching a movie screen in front of us we can separate now from our thoughts and our brain’s hard work.
Pivot left, or right which ever you prefer. Pivot could be as small as one degree or even two degrees.
As a therapist, I have been able to learn that you have 2 parts of your brain that are able to be going at the same time. That is the therapist part thinking about treatment planning, interventions, and how to best help the person or persons in front of you all the while you are present with the client or clients in the moment and the here and now. This is how I can now see the observer part of your brain. You can be walking, talking and doing, or even thinking, feeling, and sensing. This is what your observer part of your brain can be “noticing”. So, noticing something does not mean acting or doing anything about it just “notice” and let whatever happens happen.
Noted. Observe and make note that thinking happens. We don’t have to attach ourselves to every thought and make every though our story, our truth and our actions. We can choose. We have a choice.
